Lesung in englischer Sprache am 28.04.2022 – Francis Gary Powers, Jr.: „Spy Pilot: Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 Incident, and a Controversial Cold War Legacy“

One of the most talked-about events of the Cold War was the downing of the American U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960.

Based on newly available information, the son of famed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers presents the facts and dispels misinformation about the Cold War espionage program and the U-2 Incident that turned his father into a Cold War icon.
Francis Gary Powers Jr. and acclaimed historian Keith Dunnavant have written this new account of Powers’ life based on personal files, audio tapes, letters, and the transcript of his father’s debriefing by the CIA that had never been previously available.
The Author consulted for a Steven Spielberg Thriller, “Bridge of Spies”, about James Donovan who brokered the 1962 spy exchange between KGB spy Rudolph Abel and CIA U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.

The reading will take place in English and will be accompanied by the German- and English-speaking moderator Britta Wick.

Eines der meistdiskutierten Ereignisse des Kalten Krieges war der Abschuss des amerikanischen Spionageflugzeugs U-2 von Francis Gary Powers über der Sowjetunion am 1. Mai 1960.

Auf der Grundlage neu verfügbarer Informationen präsentiert der Sohn des berühmten U-2-Piloten die Fakten und räumt mit Fehlinformationen über das Spionageprogramm und den U-2-Zwischenfall auf, das seinen Vater zu einer Ikone des Kalten Krieges machte. Grundlage des Buches von Powers Jr. und dem renommierten Historiker Keith Dunnavant waren u.a. persönliche Akten, Tonbänder, Briefe und CIA-Berichte, die bisher nicht zugänglich waren.
Der Autor war Berater für den Steven-Spielberg-Thriller “Bridge of Spies” über James Donovan, der 1962 den Spionageaustausch zwischen dem KGB-Spion Rudolph Abel und dem CIA-U-2-Piloten Francis Gary Powers vermittelt hat.

Die Lesung findet in englischer Sprache statt und wird von der deutsch- und englischsprachigen Moderatorin Britta Wick begleitet.
